If I haven't said it before, I really admire VOGUE Fashion Director Tonne Goodman's "less is more" approach to style: a) her wardrobe adheres to a limited palette of mostly black, white, camel, and navy; b) she is usually bare-faced with minimal makeup, and c) she wears her hair pin-straight. While her style is distinct, it almost takes a backseat to her elegant and quiet sense of confidence. I'm really digging that white jeans are her signature look.

I was reading an article about the red lips trend on Refinery29.com and decided to try it out with one of the recommended colors: NARS Red Lizard. The idea is to wear this red anywhere and at anytime of the day. I can't tell you how many compliments I've received and how many girls asking me for the deets on my lipstick! This is one of the truest reds that I've come across and it has worked on both my fair-skinned and darker-skinned friends. It will give your pout a super saturated, semi-matte look that says: "I may not be speaking but I want you to know that I'm here."

I'm not much of a handbag person. In fact, I always carry the same black Chanel bag with everything even if it doesn't match. I have never felt the urge to run out and buy the latest "It" bag mainly because (1) handbag prices have really gone through the roof these days and (2) I can't imagine switching up bags every so often. However, I was taking a spin around the first floor at Barneys the other day and really fell in love with the Celine Spring 2010 handbag collection! This particular style (which I think is called Luggage) is tres chic--timeless yet edgy--and the quality looks to be high in caliber. That Phoebe Philo really has the golden touch when it comes to reviving a dusty French fashion house!

Here's a pic of me in Mayfair from a recent trip to London. There was a time when I would never wear an outfit like this--button-down shirt, vintage Lacoste sweater and jeans. I was somewhat of a tomboy growing up and when I moved to New York I wanted to only wear heels and channel Carrie Bradshaw as much as possible. An outfit like this, to me at the time, was too boring. I would be self-conscious that I looked too "masculine". As I think about it more, this is the kind of outfit that represents my everyday personal style in the truest way: comfy with a twist (just add red lipstick, a fab scarf, heels, and a Chanel bag haha). Funny when I think back to all of the style barriers that I imposed on myself.

In the past, I have always gravitated towards warm weather footwear in the form of wedges, platforms and anything with a heel because I believed that my size 8.5 - 9 feet were disproportionate to my 5' 3 1/2" height. But I've finally come to terms with my shoe size and overcame my fear of my feet looking like waterskis in flats. What better way to inaugurate my newfound confidence with these fabulous Balenciaga gladiator sandals in a chic shade of beige!

I first came across them in a feature in Harper's Bazaar, where Julie Gilhart, fashion director of Barneys New York, deemed them as the buy of the season. I tried them on in the store last Friday and found them to be incredibly comfortable and stylish. The $575 price tag was still a little much for me to fathom, so I told the saleslady that I'd think about them... Which, of course, in my world means searching for them on eBay. I honestly thought that it'd be a fruitless effort, but--lo and behold--there they were in my size and for a fraction of the price! Buy It Now = score!

So, I have been on a hunt for vintage Ungaro for the longest time. Last year, it was easy to come across on eBay--and at rock-bottom prices too! Nowadays it's in the 3-digit range, so imagine my delight when I found one on etsy.com for only $65!

Granted, I wish that it was in a more vibrant print, but I'm really happy with this one because (1) it features his signature pleating and (2) the style is very 80's but modern too. I just need to have the bustier and waist taken in and shorten the hemline.

J'adore vintage Ungaro.... And je will continue on the search for more! It's like an addiction. The thrill of the chase!

(Speaking of Ungaro.... I received a press release yesterday that Lindsay Lohan was appointed Artistic Advisor for Emanuel Ungaro. Is anyone else as perplexed as I am?)

Last night I trekked down to Nolita for Dream Sequins' (www.dreamsequins.com) Fashion Bloggers Meet-Up at Debut New York, a chic boutique that features emerging independent designers.

Dream Sequins writes about the most obscure and coolest indie talent, so I decided to wear a dress by one of my favorite independent designers, my dear friend Lauren Kovin (www.laurenkovin.com).

I wore the Box Dress from her Spring 2009 collection in the black version. It looks different than what's shown in her lookbook because she decided to shorten the style so that it could also be worn as a tunic. (Honestly, I was afraid that it would look like I forgot to wear pants--and it could very well look like I did haha--but I decided to just go with it!) One of my favorite parts about this dress is the back:

It was great to meet Dream Sequins in person and mingle with other fashion bloggers, including 39th and Broadway (http://www.39thandbroadway.com) and Musie (http://musie.wordpress.com). It made me realize how fashion blogging really adds new dialogue to the fashion landscape--and made me want to update this blog more often!

On a side note, I've been obsessed about getting a haircut for the past two weeks, which only happens when I know "it's time"! My dilemma is that I'm trying to grow it longer so I'm holding out... But it desperately needs to be re-shaped. I haven't had a proper haircut in four months and I think I messed up the layers by trimming the ends with cuticle scissors over the bathroom sink.

(I really shouldn't be smiling so big with lopsided layers.)

BaskInStyle (http://baskinstyle.blogspot.com) booked an appointment for us both at Cutting Edge Salon in Little Italy/Chinatown. Her hair always looks good and her haircut only costs $26. My guy Dean at Cutler Salon in SoHo is $110 and I don't know if I'm willing to shell that out right now. What to do, what to do...

Dotted stockings is a huge trend this fall. It adds a dose of 80's French chic to any ensemble and was featured in the Balenciaga Fall 2009 runway collection. I've been coming across many editorials that have used dotted stockings and credited a French hoisery company (which I haven't heard of) called Gerbe--surprised that Wolford and Fogal haven't been used.

eBay Find: Leather Bomber Jacket

Just arrived today! I've been looking for a fitted leather bomber jacket, but sometimes the shoulders are too big or it makes me feel short. This one is great because the sleeves are cropped--which I think makes it more proportional--and it has an aged look! (I think it might've been a little boy's jacket.) My favorite part is the silk lining, which has illustrations of vintage airplanes printed all over it.

It's all about finding solid staples for the wardrobe these days, and I think I'll get a lot of mileage out of this one!

A Taste of September

There was a hint of fall air last night in New York which whipped up a desire for me to get dressed up. Mind you, I've been living in t-shirts and American Apparel cordoroy shorts all week so I welcomed this opportunity with open arms! I dragged The Fiance off the sofa and ordered that we have a sushi dinner at BondSt and meet a friend of mine at Thom Bar for a drink afterwards.

I wore a Prada dove-grey top with an asymmetrical bow-tie detail, Dolce & Gabbana high-waisted satin leopard skirt, Alaia nude patent T-strap sandals, and a Chanel black satin evening clutch. No jewelry except for a thin little navy woven bracelet with wooden beads that a friend had picked up for me on a trip to South America.

Leopard seems to be all the rage this coming season and Dolce & Gabbana's leopard print is iconic (next to YSL, of course). I should've taken a close-up pic of the skirt--the pattern is sumptuous and looks almost real. Usually, I would pair this skirt with a white or black top but I think the grey softens the look.

This probably won't happen but I do have a Lady Dior Cannage bag on my list because of a picture on TheSartorialist that featured a very chic French girl carrying one with a messy top knot, camel wrap coat, and black leggings while smoking a cigarette. It's only chic if you carry it with everything.

One of my favorite fall items as a teenager was a burgundy, long-sleeved, V-necked cashmere sweater from the Universite de Sorbonne Paris. The university's crest was embroidered in white on the chest. I wore it with a tailored white shirt underneath, and wear super dark slim jeans, high-heeled cognac leather loafers, and a trench coat. Back then I had long hair. It was very Ali McGraw a la "Love Story."

Vogue Italia (November 2008): Cottage By the Sea

This is one of my favorite editorials--shot by Steven Meisel and featuring icy blondes Katrin Thormann and Toni Garnn!

The styling is so utterly chic: chunky cable-knit sweaters, simple white cotton sundresses, thick black headbands, fur vests, and black maillots--a timeless resort capsule collection.

The shoot was inspired by Ingman Bergman's masterpiece "Persona," which was made in 1966. The film is described as a "modernist horror film." I've YouTubed some clips and it looks very avant-garde. I should look for this film next time I'm at Kim's Music & Video.

Just got a Net-a-Porter.com mailer about a new label from L.A., NewbarK, by a pair of stylist sisters Maryam and Marjan Malakpour. Apparently, they're unisex and work on all types of terrain: indoors, outdoors, rain, sand and city sidewalks. They're even rumored to bump "ballet flats" as the functional (or comfortable) chic shoe. The retail price is $350 a pair. Yay or nay?

Bag Browsin': Givenchy Ombre Tassel Messenger

This bag seems to be quite controversial--judging from the seven comments on Bagsnob's posting--but I find myself drawn to it. A few commenters had said its design is unimaginative, but I was never one for too many bells-and-whistles on a handbag anyway.

It's just very clean and modern, with a full-length tassel for an edgy rock n' roll edge. (It also comes in an ochre-like color, but I much prefer the black version.)

What I like:

Not too big and bulky, but the size can accomodate magazines.
Would be easy to travel with--just lay flat in a suitcase
Convenient zip pocket on the exterior for keys, Metrocard, Blackberry/iPhone
Can be worn as a shoulderbag or as a messenger with a cross-body strap

Scarves with a Twist: Ikou Tschuss and Prova

I love scarves with a twist. They make such a wonderful and quirky accent to any outfit. Two years ago when I was in Paris for Fashion Week, I noticed that the Frenchies wear scarves almost all the time--almost with anything! I bought a scarf by Ikou Tschuss, a Swiss label carried at Colette. It looks almost the same as the one in the photo above, except in red: luxurious double-washed silk with thick, hand-crocheted wool trimming. (The one I have is also more generously sized.) I've received so many compliments from strangers on that scarf that I wear it to cocktail parties as an ice-breaker ;)

A few weeks ago, I saw these Prova scarves draped around the necks of the mannequins in the Barneys' window and finally popped into check them out. The combination of the prints with the beaded fringe makes such a statement--and so does the price: $395! Yowza. I'll have to keep dreaming.

French Terry Chic from J. Crew?

Lust & Must: Black Leather Pants

I've been noticing the trend of leather skirts and pants for this fall. I think I'd like to rock a pair of leather pants! Most of the ones I've come across start at $595, but Allure found this pair by Blank for only $158, which is not so bad--considering that most plain denim jeans start at that price point! I think these could look very chic and classic with a cashmere turtleneck, or paired with a T by Alexander Wang tee for an edgier look.

I tried to stake them out on shopbop.com but they don't seem to be listed yet. I'll be on the lookout, for sure!

How Would You Wear This: Thakoon Fall 2006 Burgundy Paint Print Silk Top

I was flipping through an old US Vogue from May 2006 and came across the exact outfit, seen in the above runway pic, in an editorial titled "Short Stories" shot by photographer David Sims. (In the shoot, model Caroline Trentini is wearing it with flat silver Balenciaga sandals.)

I have the same top in my wardrobe and I've only worn it once: paired with a full, short Marni skirt in a heavy, wine-colored silk. I do adore this top, though. The print really looks as if Thakoon Panichgul himself took a paintbrush saturated with wet, scarlet paint and applied it onto the silk in broad strokes.

Maybe I will try wearing it with a black structured silk Prada skirt that is short and full with wide pleats + black opaque tights + YSL Tribute Too pumps. Any other ideas out there? I could use some fresh perspective on this one!

Lookbook Lust-After: Opening Ceremony Fall 2009

I came across a posting on Refinery29.com about Opening Ceremony's Fall 2009 lookbook (http://pipeline.refinery29.com/lookbook/first_look_opening_ceremonys_f.php) and couldn't help but share a few of my favorite looks!

The boots on the left are a MUST-HAVE! Yes, they're a bit derivative of the Margiela sandal boots that Sea of Shoes has, but I love them nonetheless. (A sad anecdote: I once came across the Margiela sandal boots in black leather on eBay in my size, but missed the auction because of an overseas trip, and they sold for just under $500!)

The sweater on the right looks really unique and cozy. I like the idea of knit shorts, but I don't think I could pull them off.

I like the ruffle dress on the left. It looks like something that one could easily slip into for a festive dinner downtown--without looking too fussy or done-up.

eBay Steal: YSL Croc-Embossed Hooded Dress from Fall 2007

New York has only recently started to get some true summer weather, but I've already got the fall season on my mind. I found this amazing YSL dress on eBay and snagged it for an unbelievable price--I probably shouldn't have, but it was the price equivalent of a TopShop dress. It always gets me when the item up for auction is a runway piece! This one is from the Fall 2007 collection.

I love the sophisticated color and luxurious crocodile pattern, but also it looks like a fully functional dress: 3/4-length sleeves, two pockets, and a hood! Something comfortable and stylish to wear when there's a chill in the air. (I can imagine wearing this with my flat, knee-length Balenciaga leather boots or with the YSL Tribute Too pumps.)

Sample Sale Alert: Alexander Wang Spring 2009

I just received an email with the Alexander Wang sample sale schedule for the Spring 2009 collection, which starts next Thursday. So, of course, like any other experienced fashion lover, I studied the entire collection and made some picks--all dependent on availability and actual fit. (Sometimes the garments look completely different on.)

This is a very sexy leather dress without looking too S&M. The cap-sleeves and twisted ruched knot detail add a feminine touch. I think it could be a versatile number.

I feel like I need to update my selection of pants with a new silhouette. These look very elegant and clean, without too many bells and whistles... Although, it could get tricky and make me look like I have huge thighs and hips.

I think I would wear this top A LOT. It looks very Rick Owens.

I think the asymmetrical sleeves and peekaboo skin makes this dress very interesting. The color is also refreshing and modern.

This looks like a nice breezy top to throw on with jeans.

I think this dress is super chic, but I hope the slit in the skirt doesn't go all the way up to the crotch like that.

Snow White, Snow Bright: Ellis Faas' Signature Red

I just read about a new beauty line called Ellis Faas in the last issue of Vogue Paris. The woman behind the label is renowned Dutch-born make-up artist Ellis Faas (she's worked with prestigious clients on major projects, such as creating Kate Winslet's look for Lancome's internationally-run Tresor ads).

The brand was recently launched with Ellis Lips, a collection of lip colors offered in three different textures: Creamy, Milky, and Glazed. What fascinated me most is that the color palette is based on "human colors"--which means that, for example, a shade of purple in a bruise could be used in an eyeshadow. According to the website, since these colors naturally exist in the human body, they are universally flattering.

There's already a signature color, Ellis Red, which was inspired by the color that Snow White's mother wished for her daughter's lips to have: blood-red. Since the color of human blood is the same in everyone, this color theoretically works on all skin tones and ages. I've been looking for the perfect red and I think this might be it. The hefty price tag makes me hesitate, though: €24.95. I think I might still try it, but I'll wait a little. I'm still in recovery from the YSL Tribute Too pumps and that eBay splurge on the Prada cape/coat.

The Maxi Trench Coat Dilemma

A few years ago, I purchased a vintage 1970's spy trench coat that looks very similar to the one seen above: maxi-length with a beautiful swing in the body to give it a touch of drama. To me, it was just what I needed on an upcoming trip to Paris that year. I did end up wearing it throughout the trip, feeling particularly chic strolling alone the Seine, but the truth is, the length made it unwieldy to move in. I've rarely worn it since then due to this reason so I think I'm going to have to chop it off to knee-length. Aside from the unwieldy factor, I think that the maxi length looks disporportionate to my height (approx. 5'4"). I'm a little bit wistful because I like to keep really cool items in their original form. Bah.

This look makes me think of Holly Golightly. It's exactly the sort of attention-grabbing ensemble that I imagine a 1960's New York party girl would wear to catch the eye of a suave billionaire.

This is what I would call "the urban uniform." I like how Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler were designing this collection for the real city girls that they know.

The draping in this collection was dramatic and sumptuous. Nicolas Ghesquiere transformed the "tux" into something dramatically feminine.

Alber Elbaz of Lanvin is a master at creating effortless volume!

I've always loved the detailed embroidery work in peasant blouses and I personally like to contrast them with something more luxurious like a black satin pencil skirt.

If you have this issue, you can see that this skirt is completely beaded. Amazing. I love that it's paired with a slim black turtleneck--the effect is very modern, intelligent and elegant.

Bazaar Bites the Dust with July 2009

Did anyone else find Bazaar's July 2009 issue to be stale and uninspired? The editorials featuring Milla Jovovich and Doutzen Kroes look so outdated compared to the dynamic feature in this month's Vogue titled "The Spectrum's Ends" (shot by David Sims). The looks in Bazaar were very... Samantha Jones, wouldn't you say? Cougar-esque. Not very forward or new. I was disappointed in this issue. Anna Wintour is probably telling Vogue interns to wipe their asses with this issue, and smirking triumphantly in her office. Haha jk.....But since we're on the subject of that wonderful Vogue shoot, I'll post some of my favorite looks in another post.

Fall 2009 Investment: Prada Wool Cape/Coat from F/W 2008 Runway

Why is it that Prada's F/W 2008 collection looks fresher to me now than it did last year? It's as if I suddenly "got it." I did love certain pieces from this collection--and even purchased (1) a beige & grey silk tunic that fades into mohair and (2) a silvery mint green sleeveless sheath dress--but I didn't think much of the double-breasted cape/coat seen pictured above. My initial thought was that it was impractical and too masculine.

What a difference a year makes. I ended up scouring eBay for this piece and finally came across it last week. Given that it was a fraction of the retail price, I went in for the kill. (For the past two years, my staple fall/winter coat was an unstructured grey wool wrap-coat by Marni. I seriously wore it everyday.) I can totally imagine myself wearing this number through all of the cold days, layering underneath and, of course, donning long leather gloves. It works as an everyday piece or for evening--very versatile. Best part is that it looks absolutely fierce with the YSL Tribute Too pumps. Yes, I had to go there with "fierce"!

Neo Classiques Wishlist Update

I'm very proud to announce that I purchased these exact YSL Tribute Too pumps in a most recessonista fashion: I sold a Chanel bag that I never wore and parlayed the funds into these babies. I tried them on with practically everything in my wardrobe and they gave everything an instant refresher--a silk Prada sheath transformed into a modern vision! Also, I must note that, while being six-and-a-half inches higher in altitude in these shoes, the air certainly feels different... I feel as though it's a more beautiful world haha.

Nothing like a karmic exchange to rid one of the guilt associated with high-end purchases.

In the Pits: The Curious Case of Gludgeons

Let's face it--in terms of beauty, there are plenty of things to envy about Sienna Miller: her long lithe figure, perfectly slim yet toned legs, and gorgeously defined bone structure. But, judging from the spread in Vogue's July 2009 issue, if I were to steal one feature it would be her armpits!

I promise that I don't have a peculier armpit fetish. It's just that lately I've been increasingly bothered by my own, given that summertime attire exposes this area. There's a little unsightly bulge that sometimes peeks out from my sleeveless blouses or strapless dresses. An article called "Up in Arms" in Vogue's August 2008 issue defines this issue as "gludgeons." Can there be a word that is any more accurately ugly-sounding than that? My complaints don't end there. Unlike Sienna's smooth, flawless armpits (see photo on second row above), mine have wrinkles! (Well, not wrinkles exactly, but more like deep folds.)

Hopefully, I'll be able to afford Thermage treatments, Botox injections, or a mini-armpit lift to remedy this situation one day. In the meantime, I'll try to ignore this flare-up of vanity... Or find someone who can airbrush those gludgeons out of my photos!

eBay Heartbreak: YSL Fall/Winter 2007 Runway Dress

It has happened to fashionistas the world over: the eBay steal that got away.

This week, for me, it was this fabulous silk/wool/cashmere dress from the Yves Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2007 runway dress. It was supposed to replace my long-sleeved Narciso Rodriguez number as the Go-To LBD in my wardrobe. This dress would've worked in numerous settings: Sotheby's cocktails, nice dinners, business meetings, or just on a regular day where I feel like dressing up more polished than usual. It would've been the perfect blank canvas where I could experiment with different belts, gloves, shoes, hosiery, and jewelry.

My highest bid was $175. The dress sold for $188. Tragedy!!! Quel dommage!!! I checked my email and realized that I never received any warnings from eBay about being outbid. Pourquoi??? I actually wailed with sorrow when I saw that big red X followed by "Sorry, you were outbid."

Now I am left with thoughts of what would've been. Sigh. The worst.

A Look I Like: Morning Coffee Run or... The Morning-After Run?

The pajama trend has been a controversial point in many fashion forums and discussions--with the main drawback being that it looks too sloppy to wear in public. Ever since I saw it in the early Prada collections, I have been intrigued by how elegant it can look. Obviously it takes someone with panache to pull it off. I think it works best when either the top or bottom is paired with something unexpected. (Ex. A silk pajama top with a satin evening skirt or pajama pants with a blazer, as seen above.) I love how stylist/editor Anastasia Barbieri created a long, unstructured silhouette with the oversized masculine blazer and beige scarf.

This reminds me of something that I used to do when I was a single college student living in the West Village--toss an overcoat over my jammies and run downstairs to Taylor's Bakery for a coffee or English breakfast tea...Although I doubt I looked nearly as chic!

Style Sighting: Dree Hemingway

Last night, at the Cinema Society's after-party for "The Brothers Bloom" (starring Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz, and Mark Ruffalo), I met the lovely Dree Hemingway. While she simply introduced herself as "Dree," I instantly recognized her from the Who What Wear Daily mailer where she was featured as Girl of the Month.

I was chatting with Dree's friend Becka, who called her over and showed her my Ikou Tschuss scarf. It was sort of hard to miss--the giant scarf is made from a bright, vermillion red double-washed silk with a multicolored wool crocheted trim. "Omg, I'm obsessed with scarves!" she marveled, "Where can I get one?"

***Ok. Before I continue, I must note that I had chatted with Adrien Brody earlier. While that in itself made me pinch myself... The fact that Dree Hemingway, WWW's Girl of the Month, liked something that I (?!) was wearing??? That was beyond.***

At one point our conversation veered towards vintage shopping in New York. I told her about a fabulous vintage dress that I had purchased last summer from Narnia, a shop on the Lower East Side. As I was describing the polka dot tulle train and silk flowers on the back, she exclaimed: "I know exactly which dress you're talking about. It was very Lacroix! I was going to buy it but when I came back it was gone!"

What are the odds of that? So, we exchanged numbers so that we can go vintage shopping together one weekend.

While the summertime warrants showing off some skin in an overtly feminine manner (minidresses, denim cut-offs, platform wedges, etc.), I love how she paired this vintage playsuit with the blue-tinted sunglasses and brogues. There's something very sexy and confident about incorporating these masculine elements.

I've always kind of wanted full wavy hair like that. (Sadly, I took the plunge with a full-on perm a la Carrie Bradshaw six years ago and realized that it was not for me.) I think this look also works because she is glowy with a slight tan.

No Ordinary Beauty: Lauren Hutton

Yesterday morning, at the press preview for the Costume Institute's "Model as Muse" exhibition, I snapped this photo of a young Lauren Hutton with my BlackBerry. I found that I could connect to her face for some reason--perhaps because own my eyes are slightly askew like hers.

According to the exhibition, Hutton gained great commercial success because of her irregular features. Many American women could relate to the image that she projected. And, while she grew to become an iconic model, I have to admit that she also sometimes looks like a crazy lady nowadays with the kinky hair, gapped teeth, and disconjugated gaze.

This is one of the best poses ever. Makes your legs look really long. Just make sure to keep your posture straight, yet naturally relaxed. Shoulders back and down. The only minus I have with Giovanna in this photo is that her eyes look dead. As Tyra says: "Smile with your eyes." I'm not a huge fan of Tyra Banks, but that tip is actually a very good one for photo-ops.

I'm still on the hunt for this Prada skirt from the Spring 2007 collection! (By George, I will find you if I have to scour every consignment shop and listing on eBay until the world stops spinning!!!)

I remember when this look first debuted on the runway. I had two thoughts: (1) it's shockingly short, and (2) the entire collection was primarily done in Duchesse satin--quite impractical for a Spring/Summer collection, no?

I didn't think that such an abbreviated length could translate into reality. Then I saw how Anna Della Russo (editor at large for Vogue Nippon) paired it with black stockings. And I couldn't imagine such a luxurious fabric in a casual context until I saw how it was styled on Natalia Vodianova with an oversized classic white shirt.... Thus proving that this hot little number is indeed a wearable and versatile piece.

(Seems like I'm in a very Prada moment tonight!)

Gorgeously shot by Steven Meisel, this ad campaign showcases a ravaged elegance that only the genius of Miuccia Prada can successfully conjure. The models look incredibly weightless, yet radiate with the grace of goddesses.

Polished chignons, dangling pearl earrings, flushed cheeks, and glowing skin!.... These tenants of femininity, matched with permanently wrinkled garments, create a dichotomy that's utterly glamorous.

HBO's fictionalized version of Grey Gardens has the tagline: "True glamour never fades." To me, Prada's Spring 2009 collection is like Little Edie: something vibrant and inspired that still retains that final thread; that flickering light, that connects it to a concept of beauty that's beyond its own realization.

See and Be Seen: La Societe (Paris)

I just read about La Societe in the latest issue of VOGUE. Beautifully designed by the talented Christian Liaigre, this chic restaurant is located in the heart of Saint Germain des Pres and owned by Jean-Louis Costes (one of the Costes brothers) and Alex Denis (who also owns the fashionable hot spot L'Avenue).

I'm a huge fan of Liaigre's aesthetic. My friend Didit's apartment in Paris is completely designed by Liaigre, including custom-made sofas and bookcases. I had the pleasure of staying a week in his home and can attest that it is truly a comfortable and beautiful space. The signature look is that of high modern lines mixed with a Deco sensibility--there's an aura of restrained luxury and genuine quality.

While the reviews of the food is predictable for such trendy places (overpriced and repetitive), I'd still want to soak in the scene! A flute of champagne at the white marble bar while partaking in the live jazz performances--sounds like a nice evening to me. This place has already garnered a reputation for being a magnet for the fashionable set. What better place is there to have an excuse to flex your style muscles?

This look was shot in Milan. Sometimes you don't need to wear intricate, show-stopping pieces to command attention. The sharp combination of tailored white shirt, cardigan, blazer and jeans is elevated by a bright bag and sexy heels. Low-key and cool. Good to keep in mind for future travel.

Guess it doesn't hurt that the bag is the Stephen Sprouse one for Louis Vuitton.

I find myself drawn to the eccentric touches in this look: satin turban, antique starburst earrings, turquoise python clutch. I'm not sure how this would play out in real life, but against the basic palette of camel, white, and black, it certainly illustrates "classic with a twist."

I loved when Prada showed this satin turban on the s/s 2007 runway show. It looked exotic and bold. Vanessa Traina and Rachel Roy have been photographed looking very stylish while sporting this headpiece, but I'm not one to assume that I can pull it off myself.

Mainly this photo reminds me of what a statement accessories can make... And that a rich burgundy and bright turquoise look quite striking together!

I really adore this look. All of the foundations of a chic wardrobe are found here: aviator sunglasses, versatile scarf, fur jacket, striped tee, slouchy trousers, Mary Janes, men's watch, simple bangle, and petite crossbody bag. Together, they form a look that is at once sporty, luxurious, girly, masculine, on-trend, and classic. I love everything about this ensemble, right down to the red nail polish.

From the looks of the comments on this photo, the shoes and pants were points of contention--some loved; some hated. The mix, to me, works effortlessly together. Sometimes the most challenging looks to put together are the casual ones.
